Where Quarry Tiles Work Best
Great for kitchens, hallways, porches/entrances, utilities and around hearths. Outdoors, choose frost-resistant options and ensure suitable drainage and falls.
- Kitchens & diners (easy to clean, low sheen)
- Hallways & boot rooms (durable, slip-resistant options)
- Porches & thresholds (frost-resistant, robust edges)
- Hearths & fireplaces (heat-prox safe surface; follow building guidance)
Slip Resistance: R-Ratings & PTV (BS 7976)
For domestic floors, a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) of 36+ is generally considered low slip risk in the wet. Many quarry options carry R11 and/or PTV 36+ ratings. Where available, always refer to the manufacturer data.
| Indicator | Typical Benchmark | Use Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PTV (wet) | ≥ 36 | HSE/UKSRG domestic low-risk indicator |
| DIN R-rating | R11 common | Often aligned with better wet grip |
Sealing & Maintenance
Unglazed quarry tiles may benefit from sealing depending on finish and location (e.g., kitchens, porches). Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner; reseal on schedule if specified by the sealer brand. Always follow product datasheets.
- Pre-seal or post-install seal depending on manufacturer advice
- Use suitable adhesive & grout; confirm UFH compatibility
- Protect edges with bullnose/skirting on steps and thresholds
Quarry vs Terracotta vs Porcelain “Quarry-Effect”
Quarry is robust, through-body and typically low-sheen. Terracotta brings warmer, rustic tones but often needs more sealing care. Porcelain quarry-effect gives the look with very low porosity and broad slip options. Choose based on traffic, sheen preference, and care level.
Quarry Tiles — FAQs
Do quarry tiles need sealing?
Often recommended for unglazed surfaces, especially in kitchens and porches. Follow the sealer brand’s datasheet and test on a spare tile first.
What is a good slip rating for kitchens or hallways?
Look for tiles with PTV 36+ (wet) and/or around R11. Always check manufacturer data for your exact product.
Can I use quarry tiles outdoors?
Yes, where a tile is specified as frost-resistant. Ensure appropriate drainage/falls and a suitable external-grade installation system.
Are bullnose and step pieces available?
Yes. We stock bullnose, corners, skirting and step treads to finish edges and stairs neatly.
Are quarry tiles suitable with underfloor heating?
Yes. Use UFH-rated adhesives/grouts and follow heat-up protocols set by the system and adhesive brands.
