What is SPC Flooring?
SPC (Stone Polymer/Plastic Composite)—also called rigid core vinyl—uses a limestone-based core that resists warping and movement. It’s fully waterproof, highly stable in temperature changes, and ideal for busy British homes that need hard-wearing, easy-clean floors.
- Rigid core stability: minimises expansion and contraction in conservatories and high-sun rooms.
- Waterproof: perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and rentals.
- Click-fit: modern locking systems make installation fast and tidy over suitable subfloors.
- Realistic designs: wood and stone looks with matt finishes, bevels and textured surfaces.
If you’re new to SPC, start by requesting samples and checking the key specs below.
SPC vs LVT (and Laminate): Which Should You Choose?
SPC and LVT are both types of vinyl plank; laminate is a different, fibreboard-based product. Use the quick comparison to decide what fits your room and lifestyle.
Comparison: SPC vs LVT vs Laminate
Feature | SPC (Rigid Core Vinyl) | LVT (Flexible Vinyl) | Laminate |
---|---|---|---|
Water Resistance | 100% waterproof | Waterproof (most ranges) | Moisture-resistant (not waterproof) |
Core & Stability | Stone-based core resists temperature swings | Flexible core; good, but less rigid | Wood-based core; sensitive to moisture |
Underfoot Feel | Firm; often with acoustic backing | Softer, slightly warmer feel | Firm; can sound hollow without good underlay |
Typical Use | Kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, rentals | Most rooms; great for living areas | Dry rooms only (lounges, bedrooms) |
Installation | Click-lock; DIY-friendly on flat subfloors | Click-lock or gluedown | Click-lock; needs separate underlay |
Rule of thumb: choose SPC for wet areas, temperature swings and rentals; pick LVT if you prefer a slightly softer feel; consider laminate only for dry rooms.
How to Choose SPC: Thickness, Wear Layer & Finish
Focus on three specs that affect durability and day-to-day comfort:
- Overall thickness (mm): 4–6.5 mm are common. Thicker boards can feel more solid and help bridge minor subfloor imperfections (always within tolerance).
- Wear layer: 0.3 mm suits lighter traffic; 0.55 mm is the go-to for busy homes and rentals.
- Backing & acoustics: Pre-attached IXPE/EVA pads reduce sound and speed up fitting; check dB ratings if noise is a concern.
Also consider bevel style (micro-bevel for plank definition), slip ratings in wet areas, and plank size (wider/longer planks make small rooms feel larger). Browse by filters above or jump to Shop SPC Flooring.
Where SPC Works Best
Kitchens & Bathrooms
SPC is waterproof and simple to clean. Choose textured finishes for extra grip and confirm slip ratings for peace of mind.
Conservatories & Temperature Swings
The rigid, stone-based core helps resist movement from heat and sunlight. Follow expansion and shading guidance during fitting.
Family Homes & Rentals
Go for a 0.55 mm wear layer in heavy-use spaces. It’s tough, low-maintenance and ideal for pets and pushchairs.
Installation & Underlay
- Subfloor prep: SPC needs a flat, clean, dry subfloor within the manufacturer’s tolerance. High spots should be sanded; low spots levelled.
- Underlay: Many SPC ranges include a pre-attached pad. If not, use a thin, rigid underlay approved for SPC. Avoid soft, compressible foams.
- Expansion gaps: Leave the specified perimeter gap and use appropriate trims at thresholds and doorways.
- Underfloor heating (UFH): Most SPC is UFH-safe. Check the max surface temperature and heat-up/cool-down rates in the datasheet.

Care, Cleaning & Lifespan
- Sweep or vacuum regularly; damp-mop with an SPC-safe cleaner.
- Use felt pads under furniture and entrance mats at doors.
- Avoid harsh solvents and steam mops; follow the brand’s care guide.
- For scratches, ask us about repair kits and plank replacements.
With sensible care, SPC offers long service life while keeping its good looks.

SPC Flooring FAQs
Is SPC flooring really waterproof?
Yes—SPC’s vinyl surface and rigid composite core are waterproof, making it a strong choice for kitchens, bathrooms and utilities. Always seal around wet zones to the manufacturer’s guidance.
Do I need underlay with SPC?
Only if your chosen range doesn’t include a pre-attached pad. If you add underlay, pick a thin, rigid option that’s approved for SPC click flooring.
Can SPC go over underfloor heating?
In most cases, yes. Check the product datasheet for maximum surface temperatures and commissioning steps before and after installation.
What thickness and wear layer should I choose?
4–6.5 mm boards are common. For busy homes and rentals, a 0.55 mm wear layer is a safe, durable pick.
How does SPC feel underfoot?
SPC feels firm and stable. Ranges with pre-attached acoustic pads reduce sound and add a little comfort.
