How to install Al Fresco tiles
Bonded installation (on concrete)
- Prepare sound concrete base with falls for drainage.
- Prime substrate; use polymer-modified exterior adhesive.
- Butter backs; lay with 3–5 mm joints; check levels.
- Grout with external-grade grout; tool expansion joints.
- Protect until cured; light clean before use.
Raised system (pedestals)
- Lay adjustable pedestals on stable, drained substrate.
- Set height & alignment; place slabs on head supports.
- Use spacers; ensure perimeters and upstands are detailed.
- Check falls to outlets; fit edge restraints as required.
- Lift-and-clean access remains possible post-install.
Loose-lay paths (grass or compacted gravel)
- Mark runs; level and compact sub-base as needed.
- Set tiles on supports or bedding layer; keep joints even.
- Top-up bedding; brush in jointing for stability.
Always follow manufacturer guidance and local site conditions. For driveways, use a reinforced, bonded system.

Al Fresco tiles – FAQs
Are Al Fresco tiles slippery when wet?
Al Fresco outdoor slabs are R11 / PTV 36+, which is considered safe for external areas, including steps and pool surrounds. Always follow good drainage and cleaning practices.
Do Al Fresco tiles need sealing?
No. As vitrified porcelain with <0.5% water absorption (BS EN 14411), Al Fresco tiles don’t require sealing. A routine wash keeps them looking fresh.
Can I lay 20 mm tiles on pedestals?
Yes. A raised pedestal system is ideal for terraces and balconies, improving drainage and allowing easy access to services. Follow manufacturer guidance for loadings and perimeters.
What’s the difference between R-ratings and PTV?
R-ratings (Ramp) and PTV (Pendulum Test Value) are two ways of gauging slip resistance. Outdoors we aim for R11 and PTV 36+ in wet conditions.
Which sub-base should I use?
Patios and paths: compacted sub-base and either bonded or pedestal systems. Driveways: use a reinforced, bonded installation on concrete. Always consider local ground conditions.
