Why choose outdoor porcelain tiles?
- Built for British weather: Porcelain has very low water absorption (measured under BS EN 14411), so it resists freeze–thaw cycles.
- Slip-resistant textures: Structured and matt finishes with typical R11 (aim for PTV ≥ 36 wet) help reduce slip risk.
- Long-lasting looks: Fade-resistant colour, excellent stain resistance and minimal maintenance compared with natural stone.
- Seamless indoor-to-outdoor: Pair 10 mm indoor tiles with matching 20 mm outdoor slabs for a continuous look.
Thickness & slip resistance explained
Most patios benefit from 20 mm outdoor porcelain for strength and point-load resistance. 10 mm tiles can work on covered or low-load areas (or when fully bonded to a concrete slab). For safety, shoppers often see R-ratings (e.g., R11); in the UK, slip resistance is best assessed with the Pendulum Test Value (PTV). As a simple rule of thumb, aim for PTV ≥ 36 wet in external areas.
| Use-case | Recommended thickness | Typical finish | Target slip metric |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patio / garden paths | 20 mm | Structured / Matt | PTV ≥ 36 wet (often R11) |
| Covered terrace | 10–20 mm | Matt | PTV ≥ 36 wet |
| Pool surround | 20 mm | Structured | PTV ≥ 40 wet |
How to install outdoor tiles (3 common methods)
1) Bonded to concrete (adhesive-fixed)
- Ensure sound concrete with falls for drainage; prime if required.
- Use a high-performance exterior adhesive (S2 / suitable for porcelain).
- Back-butter large formats; maintain joint width; grout with external-grade grout.
2) On pedestals (raised system)
- Set out falls; use adjustable pedestals; restrain edges.
- Ideal for running services and achieving level thresholds.
- Check panel deflection and manufacturer span limits.
3) On prepared gravel/grass
- Excavate, compact sub-base; use bedding support trays or stabilising layer.
- Lay tiles with tight tolerances; joint with permeable sand where appropriate.
- Best for light-use paths and quick installs.

Filter by size (600×600, 600×900, 1200×600), thickness (10 mm / 20 mm), finish (matt/structured), slip rating (R10–R13), effect (stone/wood/concrete), colour and price/m².
Care & maintenance
- Sweep regularly and clean with a neutral-pH outdoor cleaner.
- Remove algae or lichen with a porcelain-safe treatment; avoid film-forming sealers.
- In winter, brush away debris and use non-corrosive de-icers where needed.
Standards & safety (at a glance)
For outdoor areas, aim for PTV ≥ 36 wet (Pendulum Test Value) and select a suitable textured finish. Porcelain tiles are assessed under BS EN 14411 for key performance characteristics, including water absorption.

Outdoor tiles FAQs
Are porcelain outdoor tiles frost-proof?
Yes. Quality porcelain has very low water absorption, so it tolerates UK freeze–thaw cycles when installed correctly.
What slip rating should I choose for a patio?
As a rule, target PTV ≥ 36 wet. You’ll often see R11 on product pages; both point towards safer grip outdoors.
Do I need 20 mm tiles outside?
Usually, yes for patios and paths. 10 mm can work in covered or low-load areas when fully bonded to concrete.
Can I lay outdoor tiles on grass or gravel?
Yes, with the right build-up. Use support trays or pedestals over a compacted sub-base and follow manufacturer guidance.
What goes under outdoor tiles?
A prepared base with falls for drainage. Choose one of: adhesive-bonded to concrete, raised on pedestals, or set over stabilised gravel.
How do R-ratings compare to PTV?
R-ratings come from German ramp tests (e.g., R11). In the UK, the pendulum test gives a PTV number; aim for PTV ≥ 36 wet outdoors.
