Adhesive Types (UK)
Cement-based (C1/C2)
Most porcelain & floor installs. Choose rapid-set for speed; standard-set for extended workability.
Ready-mixed (D1/D2)
Convenient for small walls. Not ideal for dense porcelain or floors.
Epoxy (R)
Maximum chemical & water resistance for heavy-duty or wet environments.
Lightweight / Fibre-reinforced
High coverage & deformability for large-format tiles and demanding substrates.
How to Choose the Right Tile Adhesive
- Tile & substrate: Porcelain needs C2 cement-based; timber/UFH needs S1 or S2.
- Setting time: Rapid (F) for speed; standard for longer pot/open time.
- Environment: Use epoxy (R) or suitable C2 for constant wet/chemical areas.
- Colour: White for translucent/natural stone; grey for dark/porcelain.
Where They Work Best
- Bathrooms & showers (walls/floors)
- Kitchens & splashbacks
- Hallways & heavy-traffic floors
- External porcelain patios (frost-resistant C2F S1)
- Underfloor heating systems (S1/S2)
Installation Tips
- Prime as required; check substrate moisture and stability.
- Match trowel notch to tile size; back-butter large format.
- Respect pot life/open time; grout after product-specific cure (e.g., 2–4 hrs rapid).
- Bed depth typically 3–6 mm; coverage ~3–4.5 kg/m² at 3 mm.
Tile Adhesives FAQs
What’s the difference between C1 and C2 tile adhesive?
C2 offers improved adhesion and performance, recommended for porcelain, large-format and demanding areas.
Do I need S1 or S2 for underfloor heating?
Use S1 as a minimum for UFH; S2 provides extra deformability for challenging builds or very large tiles.
Can I use ready-mixed adhesive on porcelain?
Usually no — porcelain’s low porosity favours cement-based C2 powders.
How much adhesive do I need per m²?
At ~3 mm bed depth, allow ~3–4.5 kg/m² (check each product’s data sheet and your trowel size).
How soon can I grout after laying tiles?
Rapid-set is typically 2–4 hours; standard-set is longer. Always follow the product’s cure time.
