Why choose porcelain outdoor tiles?
- Safety underfoot: R11+ slip resistance with textured surfaces for wet British conditions.
- Weather-proof: ≤ 0.5% water absorption helps resist frost and staining.
- Built to last: 20 mm porcelain handles patios, paths and steps.
- Low maintenance: No sealing required for porcelain; easy routine cleaning.
- Indoor–outdoor flow: Many lines match indoor tiles for seamless transitions.
Where outdoor tiles work best
- Patios & paths that need long-term durability
- Balconies & roof terraces (ideal on pedestals)
- Steps, risers & pool surrounds with matching edges
- Front gardens where permeable build-ups may be required
Installation basics for UK projects
- Sub-base & falls: Prepare a stable, well-compacted base with a gentle fall (approx. 1:60–1:80) away from buildings.
- Bed & bond: Use exterior-rated adhesive/mortar systems compatible with porcelain.
- Pedestals: For balconies/terraces, 20 mm slabs work brilliantly on adjustable pedestals.
- Grout & joints: Outdoor-rated grout; consider wider joints for drainage and movement.
- Drainage & rules: For front gardens (>5 m²), plan permeable solutions to avoid runoff.
- Safety: Aim for R11+ and low-risk PTV where surfaces are often wet.

Outdoor tiles — FAQs
Are porcelain outdoor tiles slippery?
Porcelain outdoor tiles are engineered with textures and typically rated R11 or higher for external areas. Aim for low-risk PTV where surfaces are frequently wet.
Do outdoor porcelain tiles need sealing?
No sealing is usually required for porcelain. Grout and natural stone accessories may have separate care needs — check the product pages.
What thickness is best for patios?
20 mm porcelain is the go-to for patios, paths and steps thanks to its strength and stability.
Do I need planning permission for a front-garden patio?
For front gardens over 5 m², use permeable build-ups or plan for sustainable drainage to avoid permission requirements. See the Planning Portal for specifics.
How do I clean porcelain patio tiles?
Use a neutral cleaner and a soft brush. Rinse well. Avoid harsh bleach and test any new product on a small area first.
